Fall is showing its beautiful colors on Grand Lake this past week as the trees start to turn and the fishing heats up. We are blessed to be able to fish on a great body of water.
The water is starting to clear up on the north end of the lake as the water temperatures are around 68 degrees. With the strong south wind the past few days the temperature came back up from 64 degrees from the cold rain inflow.
With the strong inflow of water and the cooler temperatures has allowed us to kick of our 2016/2017 spoonbill season. We have found spoonbill from 25ft to 50ft as they start their pre spawn winter time patterns. We are trolling our favorite 12/0 Spoonbill King hooks with 3 pounds of lead. Spoonbill King hooks have already held up to the calling sticking 3 spoonbill over 60 pounds.
A question that is frequently asked is how do I prepare my spoonbill?
Most important thing with spoonbill is to soak your meat in heavy icy salt water. This meat has small pores that your want to soak throughly for the best taste. Trim any red meat and fat away from your fillet. This will leave you a nice long fillet. Cut your meat in cubes or fillet in slices as this steak like texture has tons of cooking options. Rinse again and soak in heavy icy salt water until your water is clean.
Time to cook your delicious catch. As many ways to prepare and cook this great fish I will share a couple of mine. Grab some 1 Step Marinade and pour it into a one gallon bag with your spoonbill cubes and let it soak. Put your marinated cubes on your hot grill about 8 minutes each side and enjoy some amazing dinner. It's that simple!
Soak your spoonbill cubes in a bowl of Tabasco sauce for 10 minutes then batter with your favorite fish seasoning and fry to your liking.
To find any of these great products we use daily don't forget to stop in Grove Sports Center and other Grove local stores for all your fishing and cooking needs.
