Look inside a a largemouth bass angler's tackle box or bag and one of the lures in the inventory is a spinner bait, and probably more than one in different colors, blades and weights. The lasting popularity of the bait is because it's easy to use. No matter whether the angler is a pro or a novice, the bait catches fish. Colorful skirts are one of the baits' assets.
Everything from hair to shoe leather has been used in skirts for spinner baits. Rubber skirts came out first, but they gummed-up because the rubber stuck together. Many times, the rubber skirt lasted for only one fishing trip.
One angler recently expressed concern over the bait skirts on his lures. Every year he has to replace the skirts. Not because they are old or worn out, but they tend to stick or mat together.
Pro angler Mark Tucker offers this advice:
"I spray the skirts with ArmorAll, the same product you use for detailing your boat and truck. Squirt a little on the skirt and rub it in with our fingers and then lay the skirts on a paper towel to dry. It keeps them from sticking together. Also, you need to dry the skirts off after fishing with them. On the rubber skirts try to pull the skirt strands apart. This will help when you go to use them again."
Tucker also keeps skirts for spinner baits and jigs in the refrigerator and carries what he needs for the fishing trip. "The summertime heat in the tackle box is what ruins skirts.
Strike King claims they have the Perfect Skirt spinner bait, a silicone skirt. If an angler is having a problem with a skirt, remove the old one and put on a new one. Because of the new colors on the skirts, you can better match them to the spinner baits.
Layer the skirts: have one color on top, a different color in the middle and a third color on the base of the skirt. You have a lot more color combinations and more layered colors rather than a single color.
Besides a damaged skirt, with removable spinner bait skirts you can change out skirts whenever water conditions or fishing conditions change. The new Strike King skirts have a built-in trailer. By lengthening the tail of the skirt, you not only have a trailer, but because the skirt is all one piece, you get the pull-saving action of the skirt all the way down to the trailer. The Perfect Skirt shimmies and shakes with any movement of the spinner bait.
Put new life in that old spinner bait. Put new shimmy, shake and color in the bait by replacing the skirt. You might also might try different blades, but that's material for another article. Have fun on the lake and catch a bunch of fish!
